Te Reo Māori Map of Aotearoa/New Zealand
Covering the Aotearoa/New Zealand mainland and Wharekauri/Chatham Islands, this A1 sized wall map is a great resource for learning about our places and Māori heritage. The meanings of commonly used Māori words that make place names are also detailed.
To read more about how the map was created in more detail, read the blog post about it. If you have local knowledge of the Māori place names in your area and would like to suggest a correction to the map, feel free to get in touch.
Sources that were used during the research of this map included:
- Land Information New Zealand
- New Zealand Geographic Board
- Te Ara Encyclopedia
- Ngāi Tahu Atlas
- The Reed Dictionary of Maori Place Names by A.W. Reed
- Maori Dictionary
I’ve also created an interactive version of this map with much greater detail, including the names of natural features (such as mountain peaks and rivers) and many more place names.
