Typography Maps

Maps of New Zealand cities that beautifully represent streets, motorways, rail lines, parks and more in beautiful flowing text.

These maps were created from an OpenStreetMap street grid, which was downloaded and cleaned up in QGIS before being imported into Illustrator. The name of the feature is then placed along each individual line with the street’s name’s label, according to size, hierachy and feature type.

This type of map was very time consuming to make, as each piece of text was carefully handcrafted and placed to avoid overlapping and ensure clarity of street names. Still, the resulting design looks awesome!
